Monumental Soundbyte - 59

Billy Paul - Me & Mrs Jones
Another one from the "Motown" era. This is the quintessential cheating and being torn about it song and was released in 1972.
Billy Paul is really an excellent vocalist and like a lot of great singers from that era, he had just one major single and this is it. It is his only number 1 effort to date. It has been covered by everyone from Curtis Mayfield to Coolio. When i first saw Amy Winehouse's Back to Black cd, i noticed a track called Me and Mr Jones...Turns out to be a completely different song and tune..LOL
Anyway, this song is really a passionate song and you hear it come through in Billy Paul's voice. I have always wondered if this song was written from experience. How many of you have had a similar experience? LOL. Enjoy!

How do you know these songs, uzo? They seem, well, out of your time. I love songs from that era too.

ps. Did Kool & The Gang ever do a remake of the "Jones" song?

Great song. Interestingly, the lyrics only only suggest that they are cheating. I suppose their relationship could be "wrong" for any number of other reasons.

oh my gosh the funniest thing is that i already started writing a life in a song post... i was writing about the marvin gaye version... and i was gonna sort of do a double with amy winehouse's song... the title was me and mr(s) jones... but i didnt finish it and had wanted to write about something else at the time... i swear great minds think alike... I LOVE THIS SONG... i sort of feel theres no longer a need to write it cos you covered it... i love these soundbytes.. keep rocking uzo
